Inside the Renovation Atlanta Athletic Club – Men’s Locker Room

Location: Johns Creek, GA

Client: Atlanta Athletic Club

Architect: Chapman Coyle Chapman

Project Overview: The Atlanta Athletic Club (AAC) is rich with history, founded in 1898, it moved locations in the 1960’s to accommodate the growth in membership. It’s cherished as the home of many historic figures in the golf community. This legacy is honored through the unmatched quality of resources and finishes that elevate the member experience. In this vein, the club underwent an extensive Men’s Locker Room Renovation in 2023, hiring Hodges & Hicks to oversee the complex build featuring intricate details and high-end finishes.

Highlights:

  • Hodges & Hicks collaborated closely with the architect, designer, and club to develop a venting solution for the new fireplace and rooftop chimney.
  • Navigated the constraints of an aging building, coordinating trades and working within tight overhead and structural limitations, without compromising design intent or construction quality.
  • Expertly managing long lead times and logistical complexities to keep the schedule intact.
  • Integrated high-end finishes like carpet sourced from Egypt, detailed precast fireplace work, and a specialized plaster ceiling known as “starlit.” Installation of heavy timber trusses and raised tray ceilings to enhance ceiling height and character.
  • The renovation required detailed planning to maintain safe egress and ensure uninterrupted access to the AAC’s Men’s Grill bar and surrounding club operations.

Results: Completed on time and within budget, the Atlanta Athletic Club Men’s Locker Room renovation delivered a dramatic transformation of a legacy space while maintaining full functionality of the club during construction. Hodges & Hicks precision and coordination with the architect, interior designer, and club leadership allowed for seamless integration of new structural and design elements, including custom heavy timber trusses, plaster starlight ceilings, and imported finishes, into the existing footprint. The result is a high-end, durable environment that enhances the member experience and reflects the club’s heritage. It’s a space that’s built to impress and built to last.
