Building Community, Faith and Future

Location: Marietta, GA

Architect: Smith Boland Architects

Project Overview: Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church leaders set out to create a new school, now called Transfiguration Orthodox Academy, on a state-of-the-art campus. Their vision was to create a facility that housed spaces that would support immersive learning, creativity, inspired teaching, and connection. Achieving this vision meant making an investment in the future and building and renovating facilities that would serve the community for years to come. Hodges & Hicks General Contractors was chosen to perform the preconstruction, sitework, construction and renovation work on the project due to their extensive experience.

Highlights:

  • Proactively communicated plans and navigated occupied campus events and activities, including weekly use of sanctuary.
  • Installation of uniquely designed flooring system and sound barriers for second floor gymnasium, consistently monitoring sound and vibration alongside a sound engineer.
  • Successfully navigated unforeseen soil conditions and removed ground rock via blasting. Remediated the site to prepare for new road and parking logs. Had some issues with ground rock in that area.
  • Managed installation of a signature two-story glass and aluminum system and “showcase” stairwell.
  • Tie in of new HVAC equipment and MEP systems into existing infrastructure.
  • Maintained highly collaborative relationship with architect and client throughout the build, successfully integrating the design vision with the owner’s budget.

Results: Through this important build, Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, was provided with state-of-the-art facilities that met their vision of supporting a new youth ministry and future K-8 hybrid school. The modernization of the existing facilities provided the church and community with new spaces in which to congregate and enjoy sports, and both formal and informal gatherings. Overall, this endeavor positioned the church for future growth and opened the doors for new opportunities to connect within the surrounding community.

Project Scope

The scope of this project encompassed new construction of a 16,878 sf, two-story, youth ministry building that housed 10 classrooms and a gymnasium, and 3,300 sf of renovations to the existing buildings. New spaces included a 350-person multi-purpose hall, new assembly areas, lobby, library, conference areas, café, admin space and dining area. This also included upgrading components of the HVAC systems. The associated sitework package included the creation of a u-shaped driveway that wrapped around the buildings.
